GC around Azaleas and others

| I have a very high slope that is sandy and rocky soil for the most part. It faces West so it gets direct late afternoon sun and shade the rest of the day. We have planted azaleas, rhododendron, forsythia and some low evergreen shrubs to help hold the hillside. The builder of our house spread grass seed everywhere, it is parse but there is grass and weeds. I am looking for a nice evergreen GC to put in to fill in the holes and preferably choke out the grass. Obviously, I want something that will not hurt the plants that are already there. I cannot kill the grass at this point due to the shrubs (I think) but I can get up the hill once or twice a year with a weed whacker and cut the grass down. I was looking at ajuga, bishop's weed, vince, etc. Any thoughts? |

| Unless you want a constant maintenance headache, I'd get rid of the grass before planting any type of groundcover. There really isn't any groundcover that is very effective in choking out grass, even very aggressive ones. You will just get a messy combination of groundcover with grassy weeds growing through it - likely more of a problem to maintain that you have now. You can use a product that is a herbicide that targets grasses (monocots) only without fear of harming the shrubs and other plantings (Grass-Be-Gone is one) or just eradicate the grass by hand. Once it's gone then vinca, ajuga, pachysandra, lamium or even London Pride (Saxafraga x umbrosa or primuloides) would work. Bishop's weed, Aegopodium, is not evergreen and tends to be one of the more aggressively spreading groundcovers. |
