Battling Nut Sedge

i have a couple of areas where nut sedge is taking over. sedge hammer is pretty expensive. will anything else work? often when starting new beds i'll cover the area with corrugated cardboard & mulch over that & kill off the sod that way. would that work with nut sedge or would it just lay dormant until exposed to sunlight again/
