Small groundcover for sandy, shady areas?

Hello! Visiting here from Carolina and Container gardening forums with a question for the experts...

I have small areas around my front (brick) steps where the grass (centipede) just won't grow. It's very shady (diciduous trees) and only gets a couple hours of morning sun. I put a small area of pavers at the foot of the steps (about 4', irregular shape) but there are gaps between the paver area and the steps. Soil here is Sandy-with-a-capital-S... I'm looking for suggestions for a hardy groundcover that will fill the gaps and thrive in those conditions. Larger plants like Ajuga (which loves it here) won't work for the space... I need something low-growing that won't ruthlessly invade the lawn area! I've considered Walk On Me Thyme, but don't know if that will thrive in sandy soil, especially since this area doesn't get much sun.

Suggestions are much appreciated!!

Thanks...

Claudia
