Sweet Autumn Clematis as groundcover on "chert" hill?

Has anyone ever used Sweet Autumn Clematis as a ground cover?

I have a slope that consists of rocks held together with clay -- locals call it "chert" although I'm not sure it fits the actual definition. In any case, even the toughest weeds won't grow in it. Ultimately we hope to install a water feature, but that's way down the road. In the meantime, we see it from several windows. Ugh!

I'm thinking of building up a little wall at the bottom and filling it with good soil, then planting SAC -- hoping it will grow up the slope. I could lay out some chicken wire for it to twine around. It would look nice at least three seasons . . . I hope -- and spectacular in late summer.

What do you think? Or do you have any other suggestions?

I'm posting on Vines and Clematis as well . . .
