need sweet woodruff (gallium) info

I have a bed against the east side of my garage that is pretty shady. I was thinking of planting sweet woodruff in there as a groundcover.

Should I be concerned that it might get too dense and might end up keeping my other plants (hostas, toad lily, ferns, columbine) from coming up next spring??

Also, if just the name sweet woodruff gives you nightmares... please tell me why! I don't want to plant it and start having nightmares myself!!

Thanks for your advice and insight!
