I need help with my yard

I live in Palm Harbor, FL and have been renovating my house for some time. Now that I am near completion on the inside, its time to start working on the outside. The previous owner did not live in the structure and just rented it out so he tried to use a low maintenance ground cover of rocks in the front and mulch in the back. He put a black weed barrier down (it looks like a black garbage bag) that is below both the rocks in the front and mulch in the back. I would like to have some type of living ground cover for at least the back yard but considering the fact that I know little about gardening, I thought I would post some pictures. I would like to do something that is not too expensive and as easy as possible (i have a ton of projects left to do on this house) but hearty and good for these type of conditions. Maybe some type of weed that looks/feels like a grass (I say that because weeds have no problems growing here). I live on a lake if that makes a difference. I have included pics below so you can see what I'm dealing with. Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: I need help with my yard

Hi elseniorfruita,

Your yard looks like it has loads of potential, but may require lots of hard work. You should hang out at the FL forum also. Folks there will give you loads of suggestions and will spur you on. You may even find folks that live in your area and be able to attend plant swaps where you can get plants from new friends. Post these photos over there and I'm sure you'll have loads of suggestions.

If it were me, I'd start by getting rid of the black plastic. I'd just work on a small area at a time, so it doesn't seem like an insurmountable job. Since you pretty much have a blank slate, I'd amend the soil before planting an area. Amend it with any organic material. You can buy Black Kow at HD, but any organic material will help. Hang out at these forums and visit nurseries, look around at yards you like, to get ideas. Take your time before you decide on planting. It will pay off.

Are you particularly interested in ornamentals, fruit, veggie gardening? Low maintenance? Try to answer as many questions as you can before making decisions. Good luck!

Anna
