Red leaf groundcover? Other than ajuga?

| I'm looking for a ground cover for fairly shady site, gets about 2-3 hours of sun a day in summer. I'd love a reddish accent leaf color, but I think ajuga will be too invasive. My landscape lady suggested minature coral bells - does any know if they are available in a minature form? The area these will go is very visable from our family room, so I like somethng with interest (berries in winter, fall color, etc, maybe evergreen) All suggestions welcome!
Thanks everyone. |

| Coral bells are not the longest lived of plants, specially those hybrids with burgundy or purple foliage. You might want to try wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens. It is a native plant, evergreen. Foliage turns reddish with winter cold (sometimes very brightly red) and smells like wintergreen lifsavers when bruised or crushed. Produces small pinkish-white, bell shaped flowers that are followed by rather large bright red berries. Does best in part shade and needs even moisture. |

| I have several very dwarf heucheras (coral bells) in my garden. They have overwintered, and they seem fairly long-lived. I would stay away from hybrids--those may be shorter-lived. |
