Is there a traffic resistant graoundcover?

This is for use on the slate ground (can't call it soil) at our cabin. I don't want to cut grass and only need something to hold the ground in place and be a bit of a cover for the grandkids to run on occassionally. There is some buttercup there now (and various other hard weeds) and it's OK but a maybe just a little sparse. Any recommendations? Is Irish Moss a possibility or is the ground too poor?

TIA,

Chiz
