Are Some Covers Better for Flowerbeds

I love groundcover, but it doesn't always like it's competition. I guess I need some suggestions. Are some like creeping jenny (my nightmare right now) and snow on the mountain better for puting around trees and large shrubs. The small sedum does well around my roses and in parts of my beds where the flowers are tall. What about fern gardens and flower beds? I used pachysandra under my Janpanese Maple-it doesn't spread too quickly. Any suggestions? or should I just use mulch?

I like portulaca a lot but I do know that some people have found that it is invasive but I really like it. I hear really scary things about Creeping Jenny and Snow on the Mountain. Look up portulaca just to see what you think. Research well to make sure it is what you are looking for. Purslane (portulaca type) is really pretty. Flowers all season long, new flowers everyday in all different colours.

Well, don't put in blue star creeper unless it's an annual bed and you're willing to cut out the creeper to plant (not difficult. It will clamber over and smother your perennials. See? There's one mistake I made for you so you won't have to!

In my flower beds, my favorites are Potentilla neumanniana and Fragaria chiloensis; they are well-behaved, low-growing, dense, spread reasonably fast, easy to control (if necessary) and compatible with my perennials and with each other.
