Looking for tough ground covers

Posted by J_Kills 8 (My Page) on

I need something low maintenance, grows fast and can handle semi-drought conditions. My house faces southward and we get some morning soon, but other than that it's pretty much shady in the garden bed. In the back we usually get a-lot more sun (Morning & Afternoon) But I planted creeping jenny, and it didn't do anything. the soil has plenty of nutrition..but I believe creeping jenny likes more sun then what is provided. So in terms I want a ground cover, that will kill any weeds..likes semi shade/full sun and can handle some dry heat..plus drought tolerant. I live in Southern California (Antelope Valley) so in the summer it gets 100+ and in the winter 32-..If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know!

Sincerely, JKIlls

I'd suggest posting this the California Gardening forum. First, you will get some very location-specific responses and since CA has such issues with a variety of invasive plants (that are not necessarily invasive elsewhere) plus drought considerations, someone more familiar with the specifics of your location and its requirements will be most helpful.

I'd look to using native plants - they are best suited to local growing conditions, tend to be low water use and are not invasive.

At least here in Michigan I would say ivy. I had a ton of it and tried to battle it. I honestly wish it would come back a little quicker than it is, I think now that it is under control I would like the way it looks.

RE: Looking for tough ground covers

Hopefully you received some good suggestions from the CA Gardening forum. No groundcovers kill weeds, but once filled in the gc prevent weeds from germinating or establishing.

I like how the bigroot hardy geraniums hold their own & spread, but I don't know how they perform in your climate.

When I first grew golden creeping Jenny I didn't have the spreading that I do now with it even in that same location. You might want to try it again. I think it likes more moisture & isn't drought tolerant, but mulch can help that. It did much better once I gave it looser soil with more compost.

Now I move it using the bulb planter to create a hole where I want it to go, then use the planter again to create a plug of the groundcover to pop in the 1st hole. Then I go back to the empty spot & fill with compost. The areas I "plugged out" in May have filled in, so I can't even tell where the bare spots were located. I lift it off where it's spreading across the brick edging & put it on top of the compost topped soil & it roots easily there, too. It seems like I'll have a never ending supply of it now.
