Need ideas for under Norway Maple

I am looking for a groundcover for under a large Norway Maple. This groundcover would need to stand up to a dog and preferably does not die back in the winter (trying to prevent a mud pit which dogs love to run in!!). I tried growing grass but this was unsuccessful, so I'm really in need of ideas.

Anything you plant is going to be in competition for moisture so if you amend the soil freely and plant invasive type plants like vinca or ajuga you could have success but I'd watch out for it incroaching into areas you don't want it to be in.
