White Clover around wooded firepit

I've read a little about Dutch White Clover here, and I'm wondering if that is the solution to my fire pit area. My new fire pit area is in a wooded area with filtered sunlight and existing growth of sparse grass. I'd like something to fill it up a little thicker just to keep dirt from being tracked from the fire pit into my house during BBQ parties. The existing grass leaves, etc. may do, but I think with a lot of foot traffic I may end up with just DIRT like my old fire pit area. Is Dutch White Clover the solution? If not, any other suggestions? I'm on a budget for this one, so hard mulch like stone is not an option. I thought about wood chips but that may just be a bit of a fire hazard!

Thanks for ANY thoughts or opinion!
