Best tool to manage ivy

I am moving to a home with a very old landscape. There is a ton of English ivy,Euonymous, vinca minor. It is a small lot with lots of irregular spaces and slopes.

All these ground covers bleeding into one another is going to be a hassle. I plan to eventually eradicate all of it and develop new plantings, but it will take a while.

in the meantime, I am deciding whether to keep my power mower (it's big and I don't have a lot of storage space in the new house) or get rid of it and buy a high powered weed whacker to keep these ground covers In check.

I do like to mow the ground covers in my current home -- it keeps them tidy. Will a weed whacker work as well? it would be more convenient and easier onthe slopes and small patches.
