Groundcover for poor soil

Hello everyone,

I have a large planter that has several cedars and a pine tree planeted in it.

Subsequently the soil beneath the trees is riddled with roots and therefore hard to dig. Also I would be assuming it would be a little on the acidic side.

Is there a hardy groundcover that we take hold underneath this shady area? Currently There are some junipers but I had to trim these back leaving a large area to cover.

I have tried to boost the soil a bit and put ferns in without much success.

Thanks!
