question about acerum

| I have a small strip of shady ground on the far side of my driveway that has awful soil--rocky, clay--and gets very little light, maybe an hour a day. I have worked so hard in my garden to amend the soil in so many spots. This is one area where I just don't want to have to do that. So I'm looking for something that can survive in this environment and will look nicer than weeds. Someone recommended wild ginger. Can I plant it, then forget about it in this type of soil and exposure? |

| Wild ginger (Asarum, btw) is a tough, low maintenance, shade loving groundcover, but it prefers an evenly moist, acidic soil. I've never tried to grow it in a very heavy, rocky soil and would think it would need some encouragement to get established. Can you spread a nice thick layer of better soil over the area? Asarum roots are not deep and as long as you can keep the area evenly moist, it should take hold. |
