Sweet woodruff turning black and dying out

This happens every year, and I am finally trying to figure out why. My sweet woodruff starts turning black and dying out. It is always quite vigorous until this happens and then it looks terrible. It comes back the next year, so it isn't completely dying out. Any ideas?

Can be prone to a fungal blight under high humidity that can cause dieback or the black discoloration you see. Generally self-corrects in drier weather or you can simply cut the plant back hard and discard the diseased portions.
