Dressing up an old fashioned stone wall with ground cover?

Hi, I recently purchased a house with quite a bit of land (2/3 of an acre bordered on 2 sides by an old stone wall. Over the years many trees have come and gone and the land around the stone wall is a mix of roots, weeds, stones and vines. A mess! I posted on the hosta website about maybe planting hosta along the wall, but didn't get too much encouragement. Would a ground over work? Like pachysandra maybe? I think improving the soil is going to be a hard job. It's something I'm willing to try. I need a tolerant ground cover that will dress the wall up a bit. The areas I'd be planting vary from getting mostly shade, to partial shade with some afternoon sun. I'd appreciate anyone sharing their expertise, as I know very little about ground cover. Thank you.
