Scottish Moss turning brown

I planted several areas with Scottish Moss last Spring and it had been spreading pretty well all last summer. A couple days ago, however, I noticed that several clumbs of it had completely turned brown, and, curiously, there were several clumps that were half brown and half green, with a well-defined dividing line crossing down the middle of the clump. It has been fairly hot and dry for a couple weeks now, but no more so than at times last summer.
Anybody have any thoughts on what could be causing this?

TO keep your moss happy----

You will notice that during a nice growing season the clumps will form a mounded shape--this actually should be cut in half and divided at this time. By doing this you will keep your clumps nice and happy. All that is happening to your moss is it has to deal with the excessive growth from last year---if you keep this dividing in mind--you will keep it happy and green. It is normal for quite a bit of die back during the winter--but it should green back up once spring comes around---

Does that "hump" sound familiar?

Ryan, I will try your suggestion and divide the clumps.

Thanks!
