Thyme germinates at 55 degrees F. It may be too warm where you live to grow thyme, as it grows wild in the cooler mountains in New York. Surface sow it. Maybe there's a variety that will grow in warm places, but I don't know about it.

Thanks for the reply Susan. I have a set that I presprouted in moist kitchen towels. They germinated pretty quickly. I think it would be too hot also. In fact my other plants are not taking the heat too well. It has only just started becoming so hot which is unusual, so we have about 2 more months of hot weather left. I thought I would grow them in pots on the porch till its cool enough to plant them out. This is the 'walk on me' variety. I think it is thymus serpyllum..
