Baby tears vs. Corsican Mint

Belgianpup

A neighbor gave me three large clumps of what she called Baby Tears (Soleirolia soleirolii or Helxine soleirolii) last summer. It looks like the Baby Tears I remember my mother had in SoCal.

I have been cleaning up all the debris and dead plants that didn't survive our 8ºF winter.

My 'baby tears' has mostly survived and has been leafing out. Patching some dead spots with live plant material, I realized that I was smelling the faintest odor of mint.

Now I think this so-called Baby Tears is really Corsican Mint (Mentha requienii), because I can't imagine Baby Tears surviving 8ºF.

The mint odor is very faint. Is there any visual way to differentiate between the two kinds of plants? I've looked at Google Images, and to tell the truth, they look mostly the same. Any tips?

Thanks!

Sue
