Question about creeping Phlox

Posted by mgood4u z6 PA (My Page) on

I just read where it said to cut back phlox after it flowers so it looks the best. I wasn't sure if I was to do this so I didn't and mine is looking dry and yucky. I am going to cut it back now. So, my questions are is it ok to cut back now? Should I cut it back hard or just a trim? And, will it flower again this season or not until next spring?

Thanks - Dawn z6

RE: Question about creeping Phlox

it only flowers the once, in the spring- you might get one or two flowers on new growth, but they're rare.

cutting them back by 1/3 to 1/2 seems to work best- so that the stems stand up on their own again.

I'm more interested in getting them to spread than I am concerned with the way they look, so when they get ratty in the center as they spread out, I make a 'part' there (you know, like hair?) and mulch it to encourage rooting. this year, I got to move some of those babies to another spot :)
