thyme is dying

I have 3 kinds of thyme in my front yard around step stones and raised flower beds. every year there are large areas that die. areas right beside it are still green. I then replant and it does fine until a year or 2 later more dies. Could it be a fungus. I water in the early morning every other day.

I too am going to plant thyme, I researched it before I bought it. I heard that the oldest will die out, you can replant or let it cover itself in time.

Watering every other day may be excessive, specially if your soil is moisture retentive or drainage is not sharp. Thymes are extremely drought tolerant and prefer fast draining and relatively poor soils.
