What kind of sedum do you have?

My experience with sedum is that it is cast-iron. I don't think it will hurt the plant to cut it back... perhaps look a little choppy but at least allow you to enjoy the patio again. I'd rather see choppy sedum than weeds growing in the cracks! =)

You could mow it or take a string trimmer to the Sedum.
At 4 or 5 inches, you picked a variety that's too tall for your hardly used patio. Normally foot traffic would keep it down. Try a Sedum that doesn't get as tall as the one you have. Some are really short.

Love it!
I even grow it with moss on a table. It's moved into the shade in summer and the sun in winter.
