low growing, drought tolerant

Hello! I'm wanting to use ground cover in a large area in front of my house. Some of it is full sun and some is pretty much full shade all day (maybe a little filtered sun). I don't want to have to use alot of water to keep it up. I started St. Augustine several years ago, but it takes too much water to keep it looking nice. Plus, I have to mow it! So, my question is: Is there a low growing, fast spreading, drought tolerant ground cover that is pretty and will choke out the st augustine? I don't mind having a different ground cover in the shaded areas. Thanks in advance for your help!!
