Raccoons Destroying Ground Cover

Hello: We have a Japanese-style garden and planted Hernaria as our ground cover. The raccoons have started to come to our yard and are destroying the hernaria. When we planted the hernaria a few years ago we noticed that as the ground cover grew it appeared as if we had two different varieties; one area of the ground cover is very dense and close to the ground, the other area is loose and taller and does not hug the ground.

This creates a perfect way for the raccoons to flip up the hernaria to dig below for food.

1) Does anyone know the best way to get rid of raccoons?

2) What ground cover would you recommend for an area that gets lots of sun. We already have large areas of dwarf mondo grass and don't want to add more.

Thank you

Rosemary

RE: Raccoons Destroying Ground Cover

Hello
I've heard that pet hair or human hair clippings sprinkled around the area keep them away. Also bells, if you hang something that will rattle when they disturb it they'll scatter. I have strings of cans on my composte bin lids.

You didn't list where you are. One cheat I use to look up plants is www.whiteflowerfarm.com They have an advanced search option that allows you to select plant height, type, color, sun amount etc...

Good luck with the little masked bandits
