Can I plant liriope in the Fall?

Posted by adeleroy8 8 (My Page) on

I am designing an area around my mail box. It receives full sun and lots of red clay. I am thinking of planting a variety of liriope muscari and Happy Return daylillies as a border. Can I plant these in the fall and they survive the winter? Any suggestions on which type of liriope to plant and a good, inexpensive source? Thank you. Adele

RE: Can I plant liriope in the Fall?

You are in a warmer zone than I, but I plant lots of perennials in the fall. I think they get better water, and less heat stress. I have heard, that the green liriope tends to reseed agressively, depending on your conditions, so you might want to check that out. I have some Happy Return Daylilies, and have not been impressed with them. You may want to use long blooming daylilies. You may want to consider some other plants with different leaf shape. Both the daylilies and the lirope have thin, long narrow leaves. Sorry I cannot offer suggestions since I am zone 6b and have mostly shade.
