How to propagate creeping thyme from patio cracks

| I'm planning to use thyme and other things to replace some lawn areas. I have lots of thyme growing out of tight cracks in my patio and forming mats.
Is it possible to propagate a flat of thyme by cutting pieces of the mat and putting some liquid root hormone on the bottom, then putting it on moist soil in a tray with drainage?
Alternatively what's the best way to propagate it, given that its established roots are in tight cracks between stones? Thanks! |

| I grabbed a mat of variegated thyme, shoved the ends under dirt and most of it rooted. A more elegant way might be to sift sand or compost into the present mats--I suspect roots would form up the stalks. Books recommend the rooting hormone flat idea but I can't fiddle with those tiny stems anymore. Good luck, I'd love a thyme lawn. |

| Thank you! I'll try both. |
