Symphytum in an orchard

I find it difficult to suppress weeds in an orchard because it's easy to damage the trunks of trees with weed trimmers. Here is a photo of weeds in my orchard-

and Symphytum grandiflorum, groundcover Comfrey, that suppresses weeds very well-

I can find the fallen fruit in the Symphytum and haven't had to trim it so far, though in sun it can get a little taller and may need some trimming. I know it would be a nightmare to remove. Does anyone have any other good weed-suppressing groundcovers for orchards?

If no one here on GW has the answer, you might want to check with your local extension office. You can't be the only one with this problem; surely they can advise you. Good luck! Maureen
