Replacing Grass with Thyme

| Hi, I'm in a bit of a pinch - We bought a new house, and the back was overgrown with weeds and grass. Had it taken out and some grading and drainage done, as there was water pooling under the foundation. Have to get new ground cover established before the rains can ruin the new grading and drainage! We have pets, so I don't want to kill the grass seeds with something toxic, and I don't have time to cover the whole area with plastic, as the new stuff has to get going. Any ideas?
If I just sow the Creeping Thyme seeds, and let them come up, can I control the grass, too, and eventually let it be squeezed out by the Thyme?
p.s. I have a back injury, so I can't be pulling weeds constantly. :-) |

| probably not. thyme also prefers dry. vinca? roman chamomile? ornamental strawberry? pennyroyal? Here I've found them very fast speaders, although the vinca can be invasive. |

| Hi, thanks. I sowed the thyme last fall and it began coming up, right away, and new patches still seem to be coming up. I think it will do ok. I need a ground cover to replace grass, so it has to be low growing; and if you walk on the thyme while it's getting established, it develops a lower profile. I've been pulling weeds as they come up, but so far, they do just come up through the thyme. |
