juniper and japanese knotweed mess

HI,

We are in Central PA and have a sloped bank in full sun w/juniper and japanese knotweed. The juniper isn't thriving in spite of the extensive root system. I know the knotweed is hard to get rid of and am stumped as to what to do.

Should I: try to cut the juniper back as much as I can since I don't want to encourage erosion by digging the roots out and cover w/ plastic and mulch to smother the knotweed and hope to start over in a few years. OR, should I only try to target the knotweed and hope the juniper comes back to life?

We just moved to this house and I'd like to get a jump on the gardening now if I can.

It is an area about 35ft. by 15 feet.

Thank you!
