Lawn Grass Alternatives

I live in northern Florida, and I've never liked lawn grass. I want a groundcover that doesn't have to be mowed, but I'm not sure where to start looking.

My lawn looks pretty bad right now (I can't really motivate myself to care for a plant I don't want on my land), and I'm not in a position to spend a lot of time or money on any forced radical changes to my landscape. Since clover patches have begun to spread, I've been thinking that I should just let nature take its course. After all, didn't GW Carver say clover would restore exhausted soil?

I know I said I should stop hanging on other people's judgment, but I feel like I'm flying blind here. I don't even know what species I'm dealing with; it's just some wild clover that showed up. Honestly, am I a complete fool to seriously consider letting some 'weed' take over my lawn? Is there anything I should know about clover before it gets out of hand? Could it invade my neighbor's land or attract pests that would threaten my trees (or possibly infest my house?)? Would it be easier to accidentally step on a frog, snake, or other such animal while walking on clover than grass?
