Before you pluck and rake, consider wildlife, the health of your plants and your own right to relax
Full StoryHi, all! I'm looking to go over to the dark side and replace my St. Augustine with a Straggler Daisy (Horseherb) groundcover. But, I've heard anecdotally that this can provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes, especially if you allow leaves to decay beneath them - and I do have three large trees - but I'm reading here that you need standing water for that. It might serve as a hangout for the adults, though?
So I'm trying to get the real story here. I'm wondering:
1. is there any way that planting SD could worsen mosquito problems? (I don't keep standing water, but I can't speak for my neighbors.) If so, what's the best way to maintain the SD to minimize them?
2. could the SD actually *help* with mosquitoes, by attracting critters that feed on adults - anoles, dragonflies (if they eat the tiny bees that love the SD flowers), etc.?
Thank you so much for your information!
