My favorite hydrangea is a native. It's Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'. It grows to only about 4x4 feet. The flowers are soft green at first, then turn very bright white then turn greenish again. They are huge, so huge that they flop especially after a rain. I have mine in part shade, but have seen them grown in full sun.

Wait a minute, I have three of them on the north side of my house too. They get a little bit of reflected light from my neighbor's brick house. Other than that they are in the shade and doing fine there.

They bloom from both old and new wood. I leave my seedheads all winter until the wind blows them away in late winter. Love them. Very easy. No care whatsoever. :-)

You've got enough room for massive, oak-leaf hydrangeas! I don't, so I can't speak from experience, but I think they're easy care. If you want color and dependability, I can tell you that last summer, most of my hydrangeas pouted and didn't bloom, but All Summer Beauty was covered with gorgeous blooms.
Also, Limelight was gorgeous. HUGE greenish-white cone-shaped blooms that go pinkish when it gets chilly in fall.

I second pitimpinai's suggestion for "Annabelle". It is a great plant. Also last summer I put in "Endless Summer", which also blooms on new and old wood. And the bloom colors ranged from purple to pink throughout the summer. Hydrangeas that bloom on old wood only, IMHP, don't bloom reliably in the colder zones.

I live zone 5 in Michigan. "annabelle" is a good choice.
"Endless Summer", a relativly new variety is the rage of the hydrangia world. It hit the market full force last year.
top quality in that it does produce on old and new growth.
Hope you don't have a ton of munching kritters out in your wilderness.
How great that must be though.

I second Karen on oakleaf hydrangea too. I don't have room for them in my own garden, but planted one two years ago at the temple. The leaves are gorgeous, especially in the fall. It is a native as well, therefore very easy to grow. If I had room I would want at least 3 in my garden.

I always like to support local growers. I find I'm happier that way because I choose the plant, so I know it's not the runt of the litter. Also, I don't have to pay shipping. Also, I can stare them down if something goes wrong, knowing that I'm part of the community they depend on to support their business.
Maybe you can narrow the search by phone, then go out and buy in one short trip. K.

If you live in South Central Wisconsin, K & W Greenery in Janesville is where we buy most of our garden stock that I don't (try to) grow from seed. At least, the big stock. We've tried buying from one of the "box" stores - but it seems like they are always smaller and die, when the stock from K & W is excellent. They are a little more pricey, but well worth it for us.

If not, I agree with a poster above - go for the local grower. It always seems like they care more for the plants.

We have a Pee Gee Hydrangea tree in our frontyard that we bought two years ago, and it has been truly lovely. We haven't found one for the front of the house that we are satisfied with as of yet...

Good luck!

Kris

Milaeger's in Racine is another good nursery to get any kind of plant. I live about 25 minutes from there and I get most of my flowers from there. Steins Garden Center in Milwaukee also has some very good plants. Just make sure the leaves are healthy. I have a Pee Gee hydrangea tree and they are really nice. It can grow in full sun here. You can also get the regular Pee Gee shrub, which gets nice and full. I just got Endless Summer this past spring so I'm not sure on how it'll make it thru our winter. It did have a lot of blooms this past summer. This one doesn't like the hot afternoon sun.
Good luck!

If you check your posted question on Japanese Maple's you'll find the answer to your question sources - namely Forest Farm Nursery. I posted one link to one of their offerings of Hydrangeas.

I would vote for the Oak Leaf Hydrangea for he foliage alone! Also a native. On gardenwatchdog.com this was a spot in Wisconsin.

Although they did not have the wonderful Oakleaf!!

SBIT45,

I might have a few rooted cuttings of 'Annabelle'. Please check with me in Spring or early Summer. Right now they are only sticks. I hope they'll green up later. They were left over from last spring cuttings.

I always put cuttings in the soil every spring. Just hate to throw out the pruned branches. They are very easy to take roots.

Hi, when I went to the bluestone site. I found HYDRANGEA Shamrock for our zone. Does anyone grow this one. I have all the usual hydrangeas for zone 5 and I am looking for something NEW.
