sponges in the garden

I recall seeing a tip somewhere that a good trick for keeping potted plants in the yard moist was to put a sponge at the bottom of the pot under the soil. Has anyone tried this? If so, does it matter what kind of sponge you use? Would a natural sponge degrade faster than a manufactured one?

I did a search on google and this is what I found. Very interesting and a great tip!
