My experience, and research tells me that privet will do well in sun and part sun/part shade. I had it growing well under maple trees many years ago. It did better where there was less shade, but that is to be expected. I drove by the old house the other day, and after 27 years, the hedge is still there.

Research under PRIVET, and AMUR. Google is spelling sensitive.

This was a good question though, as just recently, I have been contemplating planting a privet hedge at my new place.
