Where's My Flowers?

Last year I planted Shasta Daisies, Speedwell, Lavender (Munstead) and Balloon Flowers. So far none has popped up yet. Should I be seeing some new growth on these? Or when we had new windows put in (of all times, in the dead of winter), did the work crew smash the life out of them?

I also planted shasta daisies in one location last fall, and haven't seen them come up yet. In another location, I planted them in the spring, and I'm starting to see some life (and possibly even volunteers). However, that's the bed next to the west side of my brick wall (i.e. the warmest bed I've got). So I'm hoping that the lack of life at the south bed is the sun/warmth difference. Sorry I can't be more help, but don't give up hope yet!! -Stephanie

I planted balloon flower last year and just saw growth. It's about 1/4 inch and dark purple tips- easy to miss. Don't know about the others. Do you/anyone know when butterfly bush should start showing buds/growth?

Just today i seen some growth on my butterfly bush. My daisys are nearly ready to bloom tho.

I'm also in the Chicago area. For point of reference, though I consider myself a zone 6, spring is off to a slow start--the redbud is just coming into bloom in my yard, whereas points west have been going for at least a week. Still, those of my shasta-type daisies (I grow 'Polaris') that are coming back have come back. I think they're iffy for a lot of people. Haven't checked the balloon flower, but those are so late that I wouldn't even worry. I'm no lavender expert, but I would think you should still be seeing its woody architecture from last year, even if it hasn't started to green/silver up--did you or your window guys prune/stomp it to the ground? If so, I'm thinking that's not a good thing. I think I lost my Veronica 'Trehane,' but my straight v. austriaca is up in a small but obvious way. And with a name like CzechChick, can you tell me what bakeries still make hoska, and which restaurants regularly have good fruit dumplings?? DD, whose mother spoke Bohemian.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I won't give up hope, but I am glad I winter sowed enough to replace what may have croaked! DirtDiver, the only place I can think of for really good Bohemian food near the city is Old Prague in Berwyn, it's on Harlem near (haven't been there in years) I think about 34th street. Another great place for ethnic food is Bobek's in Burr Ridge, although that's Polish. They have a wonderful grocery store and bakery there too. James Ward, the food critic from ABC loves Bobek's. It's a smorgasboard, so you get try everything.

Aw, Polish. It's fine, but it's just not the same. I used to go to the Old Prague on Cermak Road (22nd), just down the street from my great uncle's stationery/import store, but it burned down a few years back. I wonder if your Old Prague is the same one, new location. It used to have a huge stained-glass mural of Prague. I'll have to look into it. Glad you have winter-sowed replacements ready. I'm beginning to think that shasta daisies are either naturally short-lived or they're pickier than they look.

The Cermak Road one has to be it! It's been a long time since I've been out that way. But what the heck was the restaurant on Harlem!? I'm bummed that Old Prague burned down. That place held some childhood memories for me.

Is the place on Harlem perhaps the Bohemian Crystal? If so, it's still there, last I knew. I used to go to the Old Prague as a child too (though I think many preferred the Ridgeway), and I continued to go there once every so often into adulthood. I had two uncles who each had import etc. stores along Cermak, plus my mother was loyal to her butcher there, so we visited a lot. The neighborhood changed so much, I always wondered just how accidental that fire was. I think it burned in the mid to late '90s. I think the first time I went to the Old Prague, it was because my mother wanted me to taste Christmas goose. And just to keep from going too far off-topic, my best peonies originated from my grandfather's garden in Berwyn.
