I just bought one and planted the root/bulb? in a big tub, good soil, watered it and now I wait. It's been at least three weeks and nothing is happening. Needless to say, it is still in the house soaking up what little sun we have, but why isn't it growing and also how did shold I plant this bulb?

They were slow to emerge for me too. I planted elephant ears outside last May in pots for the first time...and they took a long time to start growing. I put three bulbs in a 20" container and when the warm weather came they just took off! They don't like the direct afternoon sun (mine got a bit "burned" 'till I moved them to a more shady position), they did well with morning sun and afternoon shade. I didn't overwinter the bulbs, but plan on planting a couple more this May. Hope yours do well! great gardening to you, Justine |

I'm also growing these for the first time. At first, I planted them like amaryllis, leaving the top of the bulb showing. Then I found out that's a mistake. I also read they take 6 weeks to develop their root system before you'll see any top growth. They had better be worth it! I'm not patient.

Like caladiums they are slow. I don't grow these, but for caladiums I keep the soil heated to 93F with heat mats or Xmas lights-they still take a few weeks but then once they get going, they really get going. I would think EE's are similar.

My EE's grow bigger and faster in the ground than in pots.

I agree. I've grown them here for several years. They do indeed grow much bigger in the ground than in the pot, but I do start them in the pot. As well, they do take a LONG time to come up. They need the HEAT of the sun on the soil, and up they come....usually in June, although last year they took a long time. If you can put them indoors in a warm spot, that may help them along somewhat.
