Tomatos stopped growing

Posted by bsharwood Ontario (My Page) on

Was wondering whether anyone had some ideas on this. I planted tomato seeds about 3-4 weeks ago. They sprouted okay and the primary leaves are there. But they seemed to have stopped growing at about 4 cm high, with a little bit of other leaf growth on a couple of them, but not much.

How do I get them to continue to grow?

are they getting enough light, and warmth. Tomatoes do like it warm

Can you pop one out of its container and see if there is a root system? Sometimes after they sprout, they seem to do nothing for a while, but they are really building a foundation under there. After that happens, they really take off.

If it makes you feel better, mine are kinda slow this year, too.

I'm learning that they probably need more heat and light than I am providing them right now. I've brought them inside, and put them right be the window.

I don't have room for a big lighting system, but does anyone know whether there is a small lighting system one can buy with florescents? It would really need to be a maximum of 2 feet by 1 feet and not that high. It's a small space I have indoors before I move them out to the big patio area.

Maybe it is time to give them a meal?

Do you have upper cabinets in the kitchen? Get an under-cabinet fluorescent for a cab and use assorted things underneath (upside-down tupperware?) to keep the plant a few inches from the light. That way you use the light year-round for task lighting, then give up the counter for a few weeks to get your tomatoes started. Check out the growing indoors forum for which light to get, I think a T8 is what you want, but don't count on my memory.

I'm trying to do that for the next couple days. HOpefully I can revive them.
