Plea for help in Toronto

Hello Gardeners,

This is a plea to your kinder, gentler sides!

This is a battle that has been happening for 10 years or so…

I teach at a school for kids with special needs in downtown Toronto. We have worked very hard to keep up our gardens and some at our school have been working at it for years. Our problem is that people continually steal things from our garden – everything from snap dragons to lilac bushes, interlocking brick paths to wind chimes the children have made. We’ve tried everything but still lose at least a few clumps/ bulbs/ shrubs each year. I have resigned myself - i know that some of our garden will make it through the year and some will be "donated" to the community.
We’ve got a few school events coming up, we just got a new playground (with empty beds) and are close to the end of the school year and are frustrated at the prospect of, once again, trying to replace more flowers, so I’m asking if anyone is able to help.

I’m wondering if anyone has any bits or odds and ends from their gardens – things that propagate easily or grow with ease (i.e. would be easy for you to part with) that you’d be willing to donate. Forget-Me-Nots? Black Eyed Susans? Daisys? Violets? Etc. We’ll take anything, really. Of particular interest (just in case someone on here is trying to do some major spring garden cleaning) are spring and early summer bloomers, as would anything edible (some of our students like to sample the greenery).

Of course we’d also be very happy to accept donations of seeds too… for next year.

Thanks for taking the moment to reading this note and considering my request.

Sincerely,

Kat

I've qute a large clump of Obedient Plant which I was going to cull because it's just so huge. No one I know seems to want any. They are very aggresive perennials - not good for small areas but great for large ones. You're welcome to have it. I work in downtown Toronto so email me if you're interested.

I have lots of "stuff" you could have, both native and non-native, including several of the plants you mentioned. The only problem is that I am in Guelph. Someone closer would be better.

Thanks for everyone's offers!

Ontnative - We might still be able to arrange a pick up if your offer is still good. We have quite a few people who live outside of the city, so it might still be an option. Please let me know if you are still interested in donating and if so, please let me know what is most convenient for you in terms of time(s) and place(s).

You can post another message for me here or email me via "My Page". Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to email you personally, so i had to post this message here!

Thanks again,

Kat
