Hi. My son is moving to Michigan and his wife is quite a gardener, but our family has always lived in California. We use the Sunset book as a plant resource and I'm wondering if there is something similar for Michigan? Do any of you have a favorite that lists the plants for zone 5, I think it is? Thanks so much.

Where in Michigan? Growing zones range from 3 to 6 with micro-climates everywhere, because of the tempering effects of the Big Lakes. Try to contact an MSU extension agent in the new county, they should have listings of appropriate plants.

Thanks, I should have done that first. They're moving to East Lansing. I just wondered if there was a book like Sunset is for the western states.

Although they are not Sunset Books, I have several favorite gardening books for Michigan. Perennials For Michigan and Annuals For Michigan by Nancy Szerlag and Alison Beck, Roses For Michigan by Nancy Lindley, Trees and Shrubs For Michigan by Tim Wood and Alison Beck, and Michigan Gardener's Guide by Marty Hair and others. I own them all and they are all great. Research them on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. You may be able to find them at a reduced price. They are also sold at Barnes & Nobles in MI. Happy gardening and welcome to Michigan!! Jacquie |

Sunset has a National Garden Book which puts Michigan in their zones 39, 41, and 43 (E Lansing is 41). I love this book and it is the one reference book (of many I own) kept downstairs by my computer. Sunset also has a Midwestern Landscapting book but I don't find that nearly as useful. There are lots of wonderful public gardens in the Lansing area. Louise

The Gardener's Essential Companion! Absolute the most helpful gardening book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them! It's written by Dora Galitzki and published Simon and Schuster New York ISBN 0684863219

Also for general midwest gardening, "The Well Tended Perennial Garden" is a great resource. It's by Tracy DiSabato-Aust.

I second the suggestion of "Well-tended perennial garden". I also have some sort of Sunset perennial plant book, it didn't say it was for midwest or even what zones, but it contained mostly plants that were zone 4-7 hardy. Maybe they only published special books for the more extreme zones. I got my degrees at MSU, and their gardens are great. They've got rose, perennial, the cutest kid's garden on campus. I loved eating my lunch on one of the benches in the perennial garden. I hope your son and DIL enjoy the mid-Michigan area. I certainly miss having so many ethnic restaurants within a 1-2 square miles. -Stephanie
