Need a vigorous climber....

...for a filtered/shady site...under a pine tree...to green up a chainlink fence segment. Something not too dainty that will thicken over the years that I don't have to stress over.

I'm considering honeysuckle or silver lace... Anything else that might be a candidate? Would Wisteria work? Clematis? Or are they too fussy?

Any ideas are welcome!

Maybe virginia creeper? It grows under my pines.

Thanks Chills!

I've been reading up on Sweet Autumn Clematis and I think this one sounds like a sure-fire winner. Hopefully between the purging-sessions of my Knotweed I'll have time to plant some! He he...

I am trying Kentukey Blue Wisteria here in CHicago in shade, I know it is vigorous but do not know how much the shade and our temps will keep it at bay?
I would imagine it would be OK in acid soil..

Magpie...Check out Semerau Nursery on Gratiot in Roseville. They've got them there (that's where I got mine) 9.95 in quart pots.

If you've not found one already that is.

RE: Need a vigorous climber....

A friend of mine who works for a local nursery (in SW Michigan -- Kalamazoo County) suggested Climbing Hydrangea for my full-shade back fence (also ugly chain link). I haven't tried it yet (she just suggested it on Monday), but she seemed to think it would do well in the shade. Will take a while to "fill in" the whole fence line, but I'm willing to wait -- anything's better than that ugly fence!

try periwinkle, it's a ground cover but will climb if allowed.

Why not some hops? They can grow over a foot a day in midsummer and are hardy perrinials.

I planted a Climbing Hydrangea last year. It has doubled in size this year and has nice woody stems, bright green leaves and seems very hardy. It also grows in shade and nothing seems to bother it.
