Golden Chain Tree seedlings

| I have this Golden Chain tree in my back yard and my daughter found some of its seeds. I went on the internet and found out the seeds needed to be 'stratified'...so, I did that - freezing them, soaking them, then, I planted 9 seeds - 3 seeds in each 4 inch pot. I now am the proud owner of 6 seedlings, I guess they are called....two are quite big - maybe 8 inches high.. my question is, Now what do I do with them? They seem to be getting leggy and weak...do I pinch them off at the top to make them grow thicker? Do I leave them alone? Do I keep them in the pots? Move them to bigger pots? Plant them outside? I live in the Niagara Region. I'm not sure what zone. I think zone 5a, but, I'm not sure.
I appreciate your help immensely.
Much Thanks,
Faith

| Congratulations on your success so far. At this point, they could probably a larger pot. I would also start aclimitizing them to the outdoors. Over a course of 2 or 3 weeks, slowly introduce them to brighter light (eventually full sun) and light breezes. This process will soon fix the leggy issue. The sooner you start this process the better....they will need the outdoor conditions to properly harden off for winter. When you do decide to plant them in the garden, they will need full sun and they will survive Niagara winters without issue especially that you seem to have one already. If you don't plan on planting them before winter, sink the pots into the garden (to protect the roots from temperature extremes) or store them in a cool spot for winter (-5ºC to +5ºC) |

| Thank you, Smivies, for your advice. I'll repot and aclimatize. Am I aiming for planting in the Fall, then? I'm very excited. This is the very first time I've ever been successful at getting a tree seed to germinate (okay, I haven't tried that many times, but, just the same!!)... I am now looking at the keys to my Japanese Maple...I love that tree, too...maybe I could germinate some of those keys that are falling now? Are keys the same as seeds? Today is cloudy and muggy. Maybe I'll put my little trees out for a bit this morning. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. Thank you! Faith |

| I once tried Japanese maple keys/seeds and had good success. Start by removing the wing part of the key, it takes up space when stratifying the seed. I use the SMALL (~2" deep) plastic containers from the grocery store (the ones that are for self serve olives, etc.) filled about 2/3 with vermiculite. Mix the seeds in the with vermiculite and water so it becomes moist to wet but not soggy. Label the container, put the top on (with ventilation holes cut in the plastic), and stick in the fridge (not freezer). Keep an eye on them, water if the vermiculite starts to dry out, and don't worry about any fungus growing on the surface. In 2-3 months they should germinate in the fridge. When they do, pot the germinating seeds up and place in a sunny location until it's warm enough to put them outside. I try to time things so they germinate in spring and can be placed outside quickly. This method works for many temperate climate plants but not all. Some require a period of warmth before hand, others won't germinate until they're out of the fridge, etc. Get a good plant propagation book if you want to try other plants. |
