Nest in my perennial beds

I am finding nests measuring about 6" in diameter and about 6" deep, filled with grass and similar materials, in my perennial flower beds. I have never found any animal in them so presume we have a "night visitor"
They are very cleverly hidden at the base of a clump of flowers particularly in a part of the bed that is densely planted which I would not easily see if I were not so vigilant in checking.
Any ideas what they can be?, we have a regular rabbit visitor but these nests do not seem large enough for that and of course whatever is digging is ruining quite a large clump of flowers every time.

| My first guess would be rabbits. They also like to line thier nests with hair. The nests don't need to be big enough for a full-grown rabbit, just enough for the tiny babies. They don't have a heck of a lot of regard for whatever they happen to be digging up. Jerger |
