Castor Bean Question

Posted by Brugs_Bunny z5 ON Canada (My Page) on

Hi,

This is my first year growing a castor bean. When it produces the berry or bean, whatever it is, does that slow down it's growing? I ask because mine has one on it, but is still quite small so I wondered if I should pluck it off.

Thanks

RE: Castor Bean Question

This is very early for a castor bean (ricinus) to be budding up, and you normally wouldn't see pods until August. Your plant may be showing signs of stress, causing it to bloom and seed early. I'd remove the buds and try some half-strength liquid fertilizer. Is it getting enough sun?

Good luck... and remember, this is an extremely poisonous plant.

RE: Castor Bean Question

Thanks Andrew,

Actually when I bought it, it already had the bud starting. But I didn't really think about it. I will try removing it and see what happens. I gets direct sunlight most of the day.
