blushing bride

Does anyone have any suggestions why my blushing brides never took off? Could it be that they were just bad plants? I have 2 beautiful BBS from a nursery that are very lush and with a few blooms. They receive a couple of hours of morning sun and some late afternoon sun. I just pulled up 8 BBs that I planted under a large oak tree. They receive dappled afternoon sun and early evening sun for about 2 hours. I purchased them from a big box store and have tried to nurse them to full lush plants. After 3 years, I pulled them up and tossed them. (Unfortunately the one year guarantee expired2 years ago.) The only clue I have is that I planted one of the big box BBs next to the ones that are doing well and I will pull it up because it has never taken off either. I'm assuming that they were just bad plants. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for when purchasing BB hydrangeas? I don't want to lose another $350. Thanks
