smoke bush flowers dying

I planted a red-leafed smoke bush last year. It has doubled in size and had fifteen or twenty blooms about to burst into smoke, and then they all went brown and withered- they look like they've been burnt- not smoked! Ten years ago I has a smoke bush do the same thing in another location. I water a lot- perhaps too much?

    A photo would really help.

There is also no reason to "water a lot". In southern Ontario, Continus (smoke bush) can easily deal with dry summer weather. Some watering while it gets established is required (1/wk) but after that first summer, it's good on its own.
