Michigan in the summer...

FYI, I also posted this question on another thread started by GardenKiwi last spring. And I'm new to this list.

I live in Lansing and have a semi-shady patch where tulips come up in the early spring and chrysanthemums in the late summer/early fall. (Mixed results with the mums.) I'm looking for some perennials to fill in between. I've thought about irises and daisies. Oh yeah, I'm also a hack gardener with more ambition than time.

Thanks!

RE: Michigan in the summer...

How large is the area? If it gets at least half a day of sunlight, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is very easy going and gives you interest from spring through winter. I also like Perovskia atriplicifolia - Russian Sage. Pretty for a long time too and easy going as well.

If you would like more, fill in with ornamental grass. I love Miscanthus sinensis 'Mornign Light'. Get an aster for fall interest and fill any empty space with bulbs. You have a lot of choices that will give you blooms from early spring on until fall.

If it gets more shade than sun, get slug resistant hostas, Bleeding Heart and maybe Hydrangea arborsecens 'Annabelle'. It's my favorite hydrangea. She is so easy to grow and gets better everyyear. If the area is large enough, get an Oakleaf Hydrangea.

You might have guessed; I am a stuffer. :-) I stuff my garden with plants to look at 12 months of the year. :-P

The best bet is try to use as many natives as you can. They take much less care than non native plants.

Have fun. :-)
