Flowering Dogwoods in Chicago

Posted by amys_organics (My Page) on

I live just west of Chicago, and was thinking of planting a flowering dogwood near the SW corner of my house. I have doubts that it will survive in the climate, but I think the flowers are irresistible. Has anyone else had luck growing Flowering Dogwood or Kousa Dogwood near Chicago. I'm technically in zone 5b, but I know they have trouble growing in colder 5 climates. Thanks for your help!

I have had Cornus kousa 'Satomi' just outside Milwaukee for about seven years and it does fine. Afternoon shade helps. Cornus florida may have trouble up here, but kousa (and it's hybrids with florida) seem to do well.

i know of several cornus florida's in waukegan. all are in sheltered locations. none don't bloom, but the display can vary significantly. the best one is planted in a corner of
with a north east exposure.
