What kind of ornamental grass is in Frankenmuth?

| My family and I just got back from a couple days in Frankenmuth, MI. I was really impressed with the gardens all through town. I'd like to plant the same kind of ornamental grass in my garden at home, but I don't know what it is. It looks like something in Fine Gardening this month called purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'), but if it is, it would have to be grown as an annual. I was hoping it was hardy. Does anyone know what the grass is growing down the main street of Frankenmuth?
Thanks,
Rob |

Rob, I'm betting it is an annual grass. Glad you enjoyed Frankenmuth...such a successful small town and yes, their gardens through the town are beautiful. Tanya |

| Yeah, I just found a bunch of it at Home Depot. It's purple fountain grass. At seven something a plant, I don't think I'll be putting it in as an annual. Does anyone know if it's easy to grow from seed? |

| Jugglerguy: Here's a site, which might provide an answer to your question, but I've never attempted to grow it from seed. http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week146.shtml Bill |
