Just had to post that my little magnolia tree, only 4 yrs old is covered in flower buds again.. I thought they only flowered early spring. I gave it a shot of Miracle gro this past month and voila! I can't wait to see it flower again they are so nice. Anyone else got this wonderfull problem?

Is your "Magnolia" called "ENCORE"?????

Yes, we were going to call the Michigan State University Extension office, but haven't as yet. I will get back with you as soon as possible. Surprised the heck out of me too when my husband pointed out the blossoms.

For the past 3 years, ours has done this too. We didn't get many blooms this past spring, perhaps due to a late frost but last week we were in full flush of blooms throughout the tree.
Nice surprise each time it does this.

Lucky you!

my Yulan magnolia (young, only about 5' high and planted last fall) didn't flower at all? any ideas why?

what can i do to help it along for next spring?

RE: Magnolia flowering AGAIN !

The shot of Miracle Gro you gave the Magnolia is only robbing Peter to pay Paul. The buds that are flowering now would have flowered next spring. It's unlikely that more will grow to take their place before winter. There is also a big risk fertilizing this late in the season because it encourges fresh growth which will not harden off before winter resulting in twig dieback next spring.

I used to give our Magnolia fertilizer stakes in spring which resulted in very rapid growth and summer/fall flowering but few spring flowers and lots of crispy buds and some twig dieback. Stopped the fertilizing and it now behaves like a normal Magnolia again.

The general rule of thumb to follow....don't fertilize woody plants after July 1 though sometimes a very late fall application (early November) can be beneficial for spring.
